A report for the Oct. 1997 nutritional status survey of 3,153 children in the 15 South/Centre governorates of Iraq shows that general malnutrition occurs in 14.6% of infants, chronic in 12.2% & acute malnutrition in 7.5%. Projections of the findings for infants indicate that the prevalence of general malnutrition in children under 5 years of age is 25%, which is unacceptably high & compares with the very needy countries of the world. This is the 4th Nutrition Survey in this region. These surveys have provided a useful overview of the nutritional status in Iraq which indicate that stronger multi-sectoral interventions are very much required to better address this serious problem affecting a large number of children.Heffinck, P. is the author of 'Nutritional Status Survey of Infants in Iraq : Final Report for the 15 Governorates of the South/Centre, Oct 27-Nov 2 1997', published 2003 under ISBN 9780756738686 and ISBN 0756738687.
