Clifford I. Notarius, Ph.D., is a professor of psychology at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., and director of the Center for Family Psychology. Howard J. Markman, Ph.D., is a professor of psychology at the University of Denver and director of the Center for Marital and Family Studies. Clifford Notarius, Ph.D., is a professor of psychology at The Catholic University of America and director of the Center for Family Psychology. He and his wife live in Washington, D.C. Howard Markman, Ph.D., is a professor of psychology at the University of Denver and director of the Denver Center for Marital and Family Studies. He lives in Boulder, Colorado, with his wife and two children. The authors began their friendship and their studies of marital and family relationships in 1972 while graduate students at Indiana University-Bloomington. They have continued to work together over the past two decades, and are widely known for their work on the treatment and prevention of marital distress and the development of procedures for enhancing our understanding of happy and unhappy couples and families. They have lectured throughout the United States, and in Australia and Europe on the materials presented in this book. They have authored or co-authored over one hundred scientific papers, journal articles, and book chapters, and are co-authors of the Couple's Guide to Communication (with John Gottman and Jonni Gonso). Drs. Notarius and Markman maintain practices in metropolitan Washington, D.C., and Denver and Boulder, respectively.
