SUMMARY

A report on a 2-year drinking water study. The major source of human exposure to urethane (ethyl carbamate) is from fermented foods & beverages. Urethane in combination with ethanol was nominated by the FDA for in-depth toxicological eval. because of the widespread exposure to urethane in alcoholic beverages & a lack of adequate dose-response carcinogenicity data to conduct meaningful risk assessments. Male & female B6C3F mice were exposed to urethane (99% pure) &/or ethanol (92.6% ethanol, 7.4% water) in drinking water for 4 weeks or 2 years. There was clear evidence of carcinogenic activity of urethane in both male & female mice. Overall, there was weak evidence of an interaction of ethanol in the carcinogenicity of urethane in the mice. Illus.Bucher, J. R. is the author of 'Toxicology And Carcinogenesis Studies of Urethane, Ethanol, And Urethane/ethanol in B6c3f1 Mice (Drinking Water Studies) ', published 2004 under ISBN 9780756745844 and ISBN 0756745845.
