Polyhalogenated aromatic hydrocarbons such as 2, 3, 7, 8 (TCDD) have the ability to bind to & activate the ligand-activated transcription factor, AhR. Structurally related compounds that bind to the AhR & exhibit biological actions similar to TCDD are referred to as dioxin-like compoundsÓ (DLCs). Ambient human exposure to DLCs occurs through the ingestion of foods that contain residues of DLCs that bio-concentrate through the food chain. Once internalized they accumulate in body tissue, resulting in lifetime human exposure. The toxic equivalency of DLCs was evaluated because of widespread human exposure to DLCs & the lack of data on the adequacy of the toxic equivalency factor methodology for predicting potency for cancer risk.
