SUMMARY

Designed as a text for both graduate and undergradute students, this book presents an intrapsychic explanation of human behaviour, concepts based on psychological processes and "structures" within the mind. In this context, a unique theory treatment of personality theory is introduced. The text focuses on Freud, Kelly and Angyal, whom the author puts forth as the most comprehensive authorities for their particular theories in the field: Freud's psychoanalytic theory of personality based on desires; Kelly's personal construct theory theory for thinking; and Angyal's holistic concepts in personality.; Each of the three's theories is given a detailed analysis in separate chapters. The author casts Freud's Psychoanalytic Theory As A Theory Of Motivation, And Kelly's Personal construct theory as a theory of cognition, then noting that there is not A Comprehensive Theory Of Personality Based On Emotion. He Also Notes that none of the other holistic theorists rival Angyal in their range of hypothetical constructs or descriptive terms.; In sections dealing with alternative viewpoints, the author shows how other personality theorists actually endorse and expand upon the ideas expressed by the aforementioned three, albeit with different terminology. At least 38 theorists are discussed in this volume and all can be contained within the theories of Freud, Kelly and Angyal, after modification.; Recognizing the diversity of holistic views in theories of personality, several counterpoint chapters are devoted to the holisitic ideas. The author separates these into three major areas: theorists who have focused on the split in the mind between the real and the ideal self; recent theorists who explore the possibility that the mind is a "multiplicity of selves"; and theorists who, though not having a viewpoint sufficiently articulated in the literature, are still well established in the history of psychology.Lester, David is the author of 'Theories of Personality', published 1995 under ISBN 9781560323518 and ISBN 1560323515.
