Since Sept. 2001, the U.S. has been concerned with radical Islamist grps in SE Asia, esp. those in the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, & Singapore that are known to have ties to the Al Qaeda terrorist network. Members of one indigenous network, Jemaah Islamiyah (JI), with extensive ties to Al Qaeda, are known to have assisted 2 of the 9/11 hijackers & have confessed to carrying out attacks against targets, incl. the 2002 bombing in Bali, & a bombing attack on the Australian Embassy in Jakarta in 2004.
