Surinames archeology is still relatively unexplored terrain. Outside the scientific world, little has been published on the subject. However, the history of its original inhabitants has gained a broader interest over the years. Excavations reveal more and more how developed these people were when the first Europeans arrived in the area. They made raised fields for habitation and dug canals to irrigate their fields with fresh water. Suriname in pre-Columbian times sheds a light on this little known part of the history of the country.
