Catholic mission schools in South Africa have resisted the clamping influence of the Apartheid state for many years, especially after the introduction in 1953 of the Bantu Education Act. They refused to hand over their schools to the authorities, as many other churches did in those days. This was due to their unbending convictions about the necessity of retaining a culture of learning and teaching, and to keep pupils and teachers separated, as much as possible, from the corrupting influences of wider society. Furthermore, the primacy of religion over politics helped prevent the occurrence of political debates and mobilization within the mission schools. The Struggle Over Education explores this theme within the context of the northern Transvaal between 1948 and 1994. Not much scholarly work has been published in this field. Therefore, this book fills a gap in exploring the dynamics of traditions of struggle, resistance, and compliance in the context of missionary education. This is a Rozenberg Title.Mathabatha, Ngoanamadima Johannes Sello is the author of 'Struggle over Education in the Northern Transvall ', published 2007 under ISBN 9789051701890 and ISBN 9051701896.
