Born in Milford, Delaware, Harry Pearce was raised in Moline, Kansas, and graduated from Kansas State College (now Kansas State University) in 1948 with a B.S. in geology. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps as a demolition specialist in Easy Co., 2nd Battalion, 23rd Regiment, 4th Marine Division, and made first wave landings on Roi-Namor in the Marshall Islands, Saipan-Tinian in the Mariannes Islands, and Iwo Jima in the Volcanic Islands. After the war, Harry worked as an exploratory geologist, establishing his own consulting firm of geologists and engineers in 1951. Harry and his late wife June raised four daughters, and have eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
