Sir Cassie to the Rescue

"You be the damsel," Trevor said. "No way," Cassie said. "It's my idea. You have to be the damsel." "Then I won't play," Trevor said. Cassie thought for a minute. Then she said, "All right. Now she wants to play. She becomes Sir Cassie, but no one wants to be the damsel. Even her baby sister Amanda refuses to cooperate. Sir Cassie is resourceful, though, and everyone does get involved in the game, even Towser, the dog, who makes an amazing dragon. And the queen serves up a royal feast! Linda Smith grew up in an undeveloped area of Alberta, where she and her four siblings dug caves and played endless games of make believe. Linda grew up dreaming of being a writer. She continued her involvement with children and stories through twenty-nine years as a children's librarian, but did not start writing for children until she was working on her MA in Children's Literature at Simmons College in Boston. She now has a fantasy trilogy for young adults published by Thistledown, Wind Shifter, Sea Change and The Turning Time. Karen Patkau works in the medium of traditional and digital collage. She has illustrated many picture books including One Watermelon Seed by Celia Lottridge and Python Play by Robert Heidbreder. For Sir Cassie to the Rescue she researched medieval times and used an ancient Viking chess set, the Lewis Chessmen, as inspiration.
