Joylene’s story is one of struggle against and triumph over disability. Born in a time where it was common to place deaf children in a deaf school, she fought against the grain of society. She grew up strong and became a functioning member of society. Born in Vancouver, Canada, she learned that the common ideas of society were not always the correct ones. Growing up, she knew she wanted to be a writer; however, she was told that there was no way a deaf person could be a writer, let alone graduate from a hearing school. From the beginning she knew she was not normal. Rather than struggle against that, she embraced it, creating a special world for herself and anyone who had the privilege to be a part of that world.Wilson-MacBurnie, Joylene is the author of 'Silence Is Not Golden ', published 2006 under ISBN 9781424118311 and ISBN 142411831X.
