In her story Run to the Rabbit Hutch, Dolores Schwalb reaches back in her memory to relive her life in Medford, Oregon. Growing up during the Depression, she was the third child of five. Her father was a lumber mill laborer, and when the mills closed, her parents had to use plenty of imagination to make ends meet. They had plenty of that, along with a good sense of humor. Beans were a mainstay, and when the Depression broke and her father went back to work, she recalls the joy of not having to eat beans again.
