SUMMARY

The poet sees and depicts a mythical happening differently from the sculptor or the vase-painter. Using well-known vase paintings from classical antiquity, Klaus Junker presents an exemplary account of the complexity of these depictions, which reveal their own understanding of the Homeric epics. Traditionally, these vase paintings have been interpreted as mere illustrations of the poems, but this does not give full credit to their significance. It is rather the case that, starting from the famous heroes and the dramatic scenes in the Homeric epics, the vase painters develop an image of the protagonists which is both psychologically conclusive and artistically innovative.Klaus Junker is the author of 'Pseudo-Homerica: Kunst Und Epos Im Spatarchaischen Athen (Winckelmannsprogramm der Archaeologischen Gesellschaft zu Berlin) (German Edition)', published 2004 under ISBN 9783110180343 and ISBN 3110180340.
