This special issue of Social Research investigates the status of democratization at the close of the twentieth century. The papers presented in this issue consider whether the problems and prospects of old and new democracies should be handled together, taking into account the common, global challenges that protagonists of democracy everywhere are forced to face. Papers also inquire into the prospects of democracy beyond the limits of the nation-state on the level of local, regional, and international organizations.
