This report focuses on the loss of life that results from dam failure & includes a procedure for estimating such loss of life. Every U.S. dam failure that resulted in more than 50 fatalities & every dam failure that occurred after 1960 resulting in any fatalities was investigated with regard to warning, population at risk & number of fatalities. This data was used to provide a historical perspective of the risk associated with U.S. dam inventory.
