Author Thomas D. Schiffer has been involved in the shooting sports for a half-century as an active competitor in smallbore rifle, bullseye pistol, high-power rifle, blackpowder cartridge rifle and muzzle-loading shooting. His favorite firearms are target rifles -- flintlock, schuetzen, blackpowder cartridge. Close behind are double-barreled shotguns and pistols (with Colt's Model 1873 and 1911 at the top of the list). He has served as director and president of the Corps of Kentucky Longriflemen; member and captain of the Kentucky Longrifle Team; director, vice president and president of the National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association; and president of the Lloyd Area Muzzle Loaders. He is currently director and chairman of the board of the Annie Oakley Foundation. He has authored many articles on gunpowder and shooting, most having to do with blackpowder. His work has appeared in Muzzle Blasts, Precision Shooting, The Single Shot Exchange, The Single Shot Journal and Black Powder Cartridge News. He is listed as a technical advisor in Muzzle Blasts magazine on the subjects of powder and ballistics and is currently the blackpowder editor of the Single Shot Journal, where his column, Kentucky Windage, has regularly appeared for more than a decade. He is listed in Who's Who International as a technical writer on the subject of firearms. Schiffer is a graduate of the University of Kentucky and spent his working life as a surveyor, draftsman, sales correspondent, technical writer for jet engine development, project engineer, environmental manager and plant services manager for a large chemical plant in Cincinnati. Now retired, he and his wife, Carol, live on Flintlock Farm in northern Kentucky.
