The Internet has to evolve on many fronts including routing, QoS, addressing, efficiency and security. Multi Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) belongs to the group of technologies designed to achieve this evolution. This course presents a technical overview of MPLS including a detailed discussion on the architecture of MPLS, the components of the MPLS network and the supporting protocols required for MPLS. Operational issues of MPLS are explored as well as the issues with interworking MPLS with ATM. The course explains how MPLS may be used to support Virtual Private Networks (VPN) and Traffic Engineering (TE). What are the next steps of MPLS?
