"Only the Best" became viable by star-rating and getting down to details describing the best sites, beaches, accomodations, food and entertainment. Until few years ago the island was a haven for numbers of young people who used to camp on the huge beach of Agia Anna but nowadays it is more oriented toward family holidays. It offers a great variety of places to stay, have fun, or a meal, all at reasonable prices. The scenery of Naxos is superb, mountain villages perch on high, and little villages nestle by the coast, garlanded with some of the most spectacular beaches in Greece. Facilities for the tourist are mostly concentrated in the Hora and south of it at Agios Georgios and Agios Prokopis, and along the southwestern coast from Agia Anna to Agiasso. However, in some parts the headlong development has not been accompanied by the appropriate infrastructure and is decidedly un-Cycladic in appearance. The island is large enough so that the presence of tourists is widely distributed, meaning quiet holidays may be enjoyed even in peak season, with the exception obviously of Hora. Nonetheless, it's wise to book ahead for July and August. Don't miss visiting the many and appealing villages inland, which offer much in the way of hidden surprises: beautiful landscapes, antiquities, Byzantine monasteries and churches, Venetian forts and citadels. NAXOS is easily accessible by air and sea and has a more than adequate road network of both tarred and dirt roads, as well as ancient footpaths connecting villages and neighbouring sites.Kyrtsis, Alexander is the author of 'Only the Best : Travelling in Style', published 2000 under ISBN 9789603770282 and ISBN 9603770280.
