AUTHOR

Sloan, Stephen

SUMMARY

Stephen Sloan was born in New York City in 1932. He first fished in Central Park with a bent pin, a string, a limb from a nearby tree, and a worm he found under a rock. As a teenager he attended The Horace Mann School in Riverdale, New York, where his growing collection of fishing books was constantly confiscated by teachers and parents alike so he could concentrate on admittedly lesser subjects like history, math, science, and English. He graduated in 1950 and was admitted to Washington & Lee University. During his four years at W&L he became captain of the baseball team, wrote for the school newspaper, and became a member of the W&L Literary Society, whose most famous member was Tom Wolfe. He graduated in 1954 with an AB degree in English. Upon graduation he entered the family real estate business. In 1966 the author became the first man to take a bluefin tuna on a fly for a world record in that class. Since that time he has set 44 IGFA world records, all on light tackle. He became a pioneer on the use of light lines for big gamefish such as tuna, marlin, and sharks. In the early 1980s Sloan was asked by Senator Alfonse D'Amato (R-N.Y.) to serve on the Marine Advisory Fishery Commission, chartered by Congress to advise the National Marine Fisheries Service. He served in that post, becoming chairman, and received a commendation from the United States Government for reorganizing the commission. Sloan now serves on the U.S. Delegation to the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT). Sloan also serves on the boards of The International Game Fish Association and The National Coalition for Marine Conservation, and is chairman of the Fisheries Defense Fund Inc., special advisor to the Recreational Fishing Alliance, and an adjunct professor at the Rosensteil School for Marine Science, University of MiamiSloan, Stephen is the author of 'Ocean Bankruptcy World Fisheries on the Brink of Disaster' with ISBN 9781585747948 and ISBN 1585747947.
