Jewel A. Smith received a PhD in musicology from the University of Cincinnati. Her areas of specialty are nineteenth-century music, American music, and women's music education in antebellum America. She has presented papers and lecture-recitals based on her research at meetings of the American Musicology Society, Society for American Music, Bethlehem Conferences on Moravian Music, College Music Society Great Lakes Chapter, Women in the Arts Conference, and International Alliance for Women in Music Congress, and at Salem College, Mt. Holyoke College, and Amherst College. She is currently beginning a sequel, which explores women's music education in prominent nineteenth-century American female seminaries, such as Troy Female Seminary, Mt.
