This survey is based on a sample of 2,500 of the nation's 15,718 public libraries. It concludes that public Internet access has increased, & that the progress is substantial. Nevertheless, the survey identified significant gaps that are of concern. It raises questions about unequal distribution of Internet access among libraries serving rural, suburban & urban populations. It also addresses for the first time the concept of effective public Internet access, including access to the World Wide Web on workstations with sufficient capability & at 56 kbps or greater, as well as having a sufficient number of workstations for the population to be served.Simon, Jeanne Hurley is the author of 'Moving Toward More Effective Public Internet Access : The 1998 National Survey of Public Library Outlet Internet Connectivity', published 2001 under ISBN 9780756706760 and ISBN 0756706769.
