SUMMARY

ABOUT THE BOOK Motivation--who needs it? Motivation is what gives meaning to life. It is what helps you get up in the morning and gives you a good feeling that you've done your best for the day you've just completed. It is what picks you up when you are discouraged and gives you the boost to go on--to succeed. Motivation comes in all shapes and sizes. Motivation can be found in obvious and obscure places--it is free and abundant. But, to be useful; you must discover it; andyoumust activate it. So, who needs motivation? Everyone does, of course. And most people can't have too much of it! Because motivation is essential for everyone, the purpose ofMotivation: An ATM Card for Successis to help you: a)identify, understand, and activate your motivators, b)better understand yourself and your actions, c)understand and appreciate the actions of others (and help them to do the same), and d)maximize how you contribute to your own (and others') motivation for a more fulfilling life. Motivation: An ATM Card for Successstresses how motivation is personal. That is, motivation is a choice each person makes--no one does it for anyone else. You as an individual, manager/leader, parent/family member, teacher/facilitator, or colleague/friend have a responsibility of being a contributing citizen of life. Thus, helping others improve their motivation is possible and highly desired for enhancing your own life as well as the lives of the people around you. ORGANIZATION OF THE BOOK Motivation: An ATM Card for Successis an interactive book with 12 chapters organized into four sections: I: Creating the Right Motivational Atmosphere, II: Valuing the Elements of Motivation, III: Mobilizing Your Motivational Portfolio, and 1V: Maximizing Strategies for Motivation. Each of the 12 chapters is independent of the other; however, Chapter 1 sets the stage for the rest of the book. The approach taken withMotivation: An ATM Card for Successwas to incorporate a potpourri of concepts, elements, and ideas that have significance for identifying, understanding, and applying motivation to everyday activities. The premises of motivation are reinforced and expanded throughout the book to help the reader think about their importance. To further reinforce the concepts, the reader is encouraged to get "involved" with the book by completing (and revisiting) the interactive activities and exercises. Also, instructors, facilitators, leaders, supervisors, and managers wilt find the book to be one that, because it is focused on the reader, can be used and applied in many diverse settings. Many of the captions and side headings of the book are intentionally trite and nonsensical in nature, so that the reader might question and find deeper meaning in what are sometimes subtleties and absurdities of everyday life. The captions may also stimulate the reader to consider and internalize the frequently difficult and emotional topics. Additionally, the captions may help the reader remember the ideas of a section more readily because they are somewhat "nontraditional" and even "gimmicky" in their approach to the upcoming topic. Some of the chapter components ofMotivation: An ATM Card for Successinclude: Who's Motivated?:Two or more short vignettes entitled "Who's Motivated?" are included in each chapter. Each one is introduced by a small ATM Card icon. These scenarios depict situations that can be considered by the reader, discussed by a group, or both. The four or five questions for each vignette are meant to get the reader involved in considering insights, values, and outcomes which are important to and affect motivation. Suggested solutions for the Who's Motivated? vignettes are provided in the back of the book.
