AUTHOR

Brandes, Kathleen M.

SUMMARY

Kathleen M. Brandes Anyone who makes her first plane trip at the age of eight months aboard a TWA DC-3 probably has traveling in her blood. So it's been for Kathleen Brandes, who has spent quality time in most of the United States and in more than 50 other countries since that initial flight between New York and Chicago (we won't reveal which year). "Spending time" has meant monthlong visits to India, Germany, New Zealand, Greece, Finland, and the United Kingdom; summers studying in France and digging in Jordan; a year spent at a Swiss university; seven winters living in Turkey; and two years volunteering with the Peace Corps in the Liberian bush-teaching French and history by day to high schoolers, and English by night to the three wives of a local taxi driver. Along the way kathleen joined the United Nations as a proofreader and worked down the hall from the Delegates' Lounge-a prime location during the Cuban missile crisis. During the next eight years in her role as researcher, writer, and then editor at Time-Life Books, Kathleen received the "Most Exotic" Award-for in-depth cultural research on antique civilizations of Southeast Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa. In 1974, when she and her husband "dropped out" of Manhattan to go to Maine ("from Bergdorf's to Bean's," as one wag put it) to live in a coastal fishing village, she became a marine-book editor, attempting (not always successfully) to learn her lines aboard Wordsworth, the couple's Rhodes 19. In 1984 she established Wordsworth Editorial Services, and for a decade she served as a contributing editor (focusing on Maine travel) for Down East, the state's lifestyle magazine. An improbable and circuitous route led to a contract for Moon handbooks: Maine, her first book, and now Moon Handbooks: Coastal Maine. But surely it all started with that first plane trip....Brandes, Kathleen M. is the author of 'Moon Handbooks Coastal Maine' with ISBN 9781566914369 and ISBN 1566914361.
