Morris, Mark, Hempstead, Andrew

SUMMARY

Mark Morris After seven years of working on travel guides from behind a desk as senior editor at Moon Publications, Mark Morris hit the trail to try his hand at writing a guidebook. The first edition of Moon Handbooks: Atlantic Canada was the result. Mark has always found something profoundly alluring and sad about coastal places(he has also written guides to Ireland and the Oregon coast), and for him Atlantic Canada distills the essence of that feeling. His personal connections with the region date back to the early 19th century, when ancestors from Britain, Ireland, and France came to North America via the Maritimes. Besides the great Physical beauty of the land and sea, Mark is drawn to Atlantic Canada's rich cultural heritage-the legacy of the Irish, French, Scottish, English, and others who settled the Provinces and have managed to resist (or have been overlooked by) modern homogenization just a little. The slower pace of life there is also particularly appealing. One of Mark's favorite Pastimes in any town in Atlantic Canada is joining the locals-of all ages-as they come out for their after-dinner stroll on fine summer evenings. It's a Priceless taste of simpler times that's getting hard to find elsewhere. Mark is currently the managing editor at Expedia.com, the leading travel site on the Internet. He lives with his family near Seattle, where he can indulge his passions for steelhead. sailboats and fiddle tunes. Andrew Hempstead On his first trip to Atlantic Canada, Andrew Hempstead made a beeline for the coast to Photograph the legendary Nova Scotia sunrise. He then headed to the nearest local restaurant, and wearily ordered the daily breakfast special without bothering to check what it was: cod fried in pork fat, Pickled beets, and a side of baked beans. With this traditional (and unexpected) introduction to Canada's east coast, Andrew set off on a road trip that stretched the term "unlimited mileage" on his rental car to the limit. Teaming up with knowledgeable local, Ted Vautour, for part of the trip, Andrew traveled to the farthest corners of all four Provinces. Andrew has been travel writing since 1989, when, after leaving a well-established career in advertising, he took off for Alaska, linking up with veteran travel writer Deke Castleman to help research and update the fourth edition of Moon Handbooks:Alaskayukon. Andrew is now the author of books on British Columbia, Alberta, the Canadian Rockies, the Northwest Territories, and Nunavut, and has been a regular contributor to Road Trip USA and other guides. His writing and Photographs have also appeared in a wide variety of magazines, including National Geographic Traveler, Interval World, and Travesias. Farther afield, Andrew is coauthor of Moon Handbooks:Australia and has traveled to New Zealand multiple times on assignment to write and photograph for Moon Handbooks: New Zealand. He has also traveled purely for pleasure throughout most of the United States, Europe, the South Pacific, and India. When not Working on his books, Andrew enjoys hiking, fishing, golfing, camping, and the simple pleasures in life, such as skimming stones down on the river. He lives in Canmore, Alberta, with his wife, Dianne, and their two dogs. The website www.westerncanadatravel.com showcases Andrew's work.Morris, Mark is the author of 'Moon Handbooks Atlantic Canada New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland & Labrador', published 2002 under ISBN 9781566913850 and ISBN 1566913853.
