Born in Germany in 1822, John Henry Otto served in the Prussian army until the early 1850s when he came to New York. In 1862 he enlisted in the Union army in command of his company from the Battle of Chickamauga until the close of the war and was engaged in many of the major battles and campaigns on the western front. He also accompanied General Sherman in the march through Georgia and the Carolinas.
