This book is a collection of the letters of Helen Fox, who left her small, country village in New Hampshire in 1900 to attend Wellesley College, twelve miles west of Boston, Massachusetts. In those days, very few men and even fewer women went to college. Most college level institutions accepting women were ?Normal Schools? training teachers, so Wellesley was an exception. Helen was the adored only child in an exceptional family, living with her parents and grandparents. Her grandfather was a public figure, a state senator; but Helen's family fought her every move for independence. They did not want her participating in athletics, as they feared she would injure her health. They cautioned her not to read after dark to preserve her eyesight. To prevent their worries, Helen wrote 444 letters home during her four years at college. The letters depict a young woman's daily life at college 100 years ago, so different from today's. No men were allowed on campus on Sundays. Students could not go to Harvard games without a chaperone. She changed her long skirts five times a day in snowy winter weather.
