AUTHOR

Else, David, Bloomfield, Paul, Davenport, Fionn

SUMMARY

David Else was coordinating author of this book, and worked on the main front-end chapters, as well as sections on Yorkshire and the Midlands. His knowledge of England comes from a life of travel around the country; he was born in London and over the following decades slowly trekked northwards, via Wiltshire and Derbyshire (and a spell of exile in Wales), to his present base on the edge of the Peak District in northern England. Many of David's journeys in England have been by bicycle or on foot. This passion for the outdoors started during his university years, when any chance to head for the hills was better than visiting the library. More recently, trips by train, car, motorbike and canoe have added to the experience. David is a full-time travel writer - although still rarely seen in libraries - who divides his time between Britain and Africa. His other books for Lonely Planet include Britain and Walking in Britain. Further afield he has written or cowritten Trekking in East Africa, Southern Africa, West Africa, The Gambia and Senegal, Zambia and Malawi, and contributed to East Africa and Africa on a shoestring. Abigail Hole From London, Abigail worked for a literary agency and mental health charity before moving to Hong Kong in 1997. Three years in Asian publishing and a lot of eventful travels later, she came back to London and was employed as an editor for Lonely Planet for two years. In between, she fitted in as much travelling as possible, which was great and meant she could avoid having to unpack. Abigail cowrote the Lonely Planet Britain guide, and contributed reviews to Out to Eat - London 2002. Fionn Davenport was born and raised in Dublin - an idyllic youth interrupted only by jarring moves to Buenos Aires, Geneva and New York (thanks to his Dad's job) that left him incapable of spending more than a couple of years in any one place without uprooting and moving somewhere else. He stayed in Dublin long enough to complete a degree in French and History at Trinity College (but still took a year off somewhere in the middle) before moving to Paris and then New York. A series of odd jobs and adventures eventually landed him behind an editor's desk, and he spent three years editing other people's travel experiences for a travel guide publication. These days he splits his time between New York, Dublin and wherever the call of work and travel brings him. What is he looking for? He has no idea, but something about the perfect climate (hot, not too humid and tempered by a gentle breeze) seems to spur him on. He has written about many destinations throughout the world and has previously worked on Lonely Planet's Spain, Dublin, Ireland, Sicily and Britain guides, as well as a host of pan-European books. Martin Hughes was born and bred in Dublin where, as an adult, he dithered for five years between journalism and public relations before ditching them both and hitting the road via an extended stint in London. After more than three years travelling, he eventually settled in Melbourne, Australia where he helped to set up Lonely Planet's World Food series, for which he wrote two titles. He's happily freelancing these days and returns to London annually for a cultural catch-up. Paul Bloomfield grew up in London suburbia and, as is often the way, drifted into studies both fascinating and essentially going nowhere (zoology). Subsequently he tried his hand at those obligatory offbeat jobs people like to guffaw about over a pint (poodle parlour labourer, harassed benefits officer, bone bank technician), while occasionally nipping off to attractive-sounding destinations and quite enjoying it, really. Some more drifting led into publishing, and eventually Lonely Planet's London office. Currently he's a freelance writer, waiting to see if that will drift somewhere interesting.Else, David is the author of 'Lonely Planet England', published 2003 under ISBN 9781740593427 and ISBN 1740593421.
