Legal Regime of Nuclear Energy : A Comprehensive Guide to International and European Union Law

The volume offers a comprehensive presentation of current international and European Union legislation in the field of nuclear energy, which has developed substantially over the past fifteen years or more. The volume also addresses instruments and acts pertaining to related aspects of nuclear energy, e.g. environmental protection, waste disposal etc. Each instrument and act is accompanied by relevant background information as to origin, contents and developments. All the material, covering a particularly vast range of subject matter, is divided into two parts, one addressing the legal regime governing the safe use of nuclear energy, the other dealing with the legal regime intended to ensure the peaceful use of nuclear energy. The final part of the volume contains an appendix, which addresses selected case law of the Court of Justice of the European Communities pertaining to nuclear energy. The author has been involved in the nuclear sector since 1965 as part of ENEA, the current Italian governmental agency for new technologies, energy and the environment, where he is the legal adviser on the subject matter addressed in this volume. During the 1980s he was Head of Legal Affairs at the ENEA Nuclear Safety and Health Protection Directorate. In the early 1990s he was seconded to the Commission of the European Communities to work for several years as legal expert on nuclear safety and radiation protection law. He has always followed the full range of nuclear law issues, hence his broad expertise and experience which he put to use in many different fora, such as national and international working groups, the drafting and negotiation of international instruments and acts, teaching etc. He is the author of numerous articles, studies, books and so forth.
