Castañeda is the best known intellectual writing about politics in contemporary Latin America, and he is famous in the U.S. as well. He currently is Professor of Politics at New York University, and from 2000-2003 served as the Mexican foreign minster. He is a regular columnist for the Mexican daily Reforma, The Los Angeles Times, and Newsweek International . Born and raised in Mexico City, Castañeda was educated at Princeton University and the Sorbonne. He received his Ph.D. from the Ecole Pratiquede Hautes Etudes, Paris, in 1978. His academic interests are wide-ranging, including Latin American politics, comparative politics, and U.S.-Latin America relations. He has been a senior associate of the Carnegie Institute for International Peace in Washington and a visiting professor at Princeton, Dartmouth College, and the University of California at Berkeley.
