Coming to America for the first time in 1987 from Osaka, Japan, Kazumi dreamed of having a small studio in some SoHo garage and of working in the charged environment of New York. With no knowledge of English, she plunged directly into a program at the New York Studio School, where she began to create what would become the subject of her first museum show at the New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York, in 1993. Believing that the impulse to make art is directly related to one's life experiences, Kazumi paid attention to the differences between her Japanese upbringing to age 25 and her newly adopted New York life. That dissonance became the source of the words and works that are recorded here. Embodying a deep respect for earthly materials and object making formed by hand techniques, Kazumi brings forth her cultural conditioning and history with objects that are intimately conceived and received.Tanaka, Kazumi is the author of 'Kazumi Tanaka Home-Childhood-Loss-Dreams' with ISBN 9781878607843 and ISBN 1878607847.
