The papers compiled in this special issue of Social Research were originally presented at a conference held at the New School for Social Research in April 1995 addressing the debate about what the proper relationship between humans and other animals ought to be. These papers examine our relationship with other animals over time and in different cultures, as well as how that relationship has reflected different understandings of what it means to be human.
