SUMMARY

This report highlights the major challenge faced by the Department for Education and Skills in reducing pupil absence from schools. Nearly 7 per cent (450,000 pupils) do not attend their state maintained school each day, including more than 0.7 per cent (50,000 pupils) whose absences are unauthorized. Despite efforts to reduce the rate of unauthorized absence, the causes have proved difficult to tackle and unauthorized absence has remained fairly steady. According to this report, the Department should increase the focus on primary school absence and parental attitudes.Great Britain, National Audit Office Staff is the author of 'Improving School Attendance in England Hc 212, Session 2004-2005', published 2005 under ISBN 9780102932133 and ISBN 0102932131.
