"THESE REPORTS ARE KEY TOOLS FOR ANYONE CONCERNED ABOUT WORKING TO END HUNGER, MALNUTRITION & POVERTY." TONY P. HALL, CHAIRMAN, HOUSE SELECT COMMITTEE ON HUNGER. PURPOSE: Bread for the World Institute on Hunger & Development (BFWI) is publishing a report on hunger among "uprooted people." Uprooted people are involuntarily displaced within their countries or driven to leave their countries by political, economic, &/or environmental factors. BFWI will release the report & its accompanying study aid on World Food Day, October 16, 1992. The main audience is U.S. citizens concerned about hunger. HUNGER 1993 should prove especially useful for educators & students from secondary school through the graduate level, policy-makers, & opinion shapers. A major objective of HUNGER 1993 is to foster greater understanding of involuntary displacement as a cause & effect of hunger. In addition, the report will analyze the reasons why people become uprooted, & suggest changes in the U.S. & international policies likely to: improve the nutritional status of uprooted people; enhance the capacity of the international community to respond to emergency & long-term needs of uprooted people, including exploration of guidelines under which the international community might intervene on behalf of the internally displaced people; address the causes of current & likely future involuntary displacement; & facilitate resettlement & reintegration of uprooted people into countries of origin or asylum, so that they can achieve self-reliance. The report will also provide summaries of the current (1991-1992) hunger situation by global region, & will update the statistical tables which appear in HUNGER 1992.
