SUMMARY

In 2003, 89% of American households were food secure (FS), meaning that they had access, at all times, to enough food for an active, healthy life for all members. The remaining households were food insecure (FI) at least some time during that year. The prevalence of FI is 11% of households. This report provides statistics on the food security of U.S. households, as well as on how much they spent for food & the extent to which FI households participated in Federal & community food assistance programs. The typical FS household in the U.S. spent 34% more on food than the typical FI household of the same size. Just over half of all FI households participated in one or more of the three largest Federal food assistance programs.Nord, Mark is the author of 'Household Food Security in the United States', published 2005 under ISBN 9781422300831 and ISBN 1422300838.
