Valerie Sokolova was born and raised in Lvov, Ukraine, and later moved to Minsk, Belarus, where she graduated from the Belarus State Academy of Arts in 1986. She has illustrated some thirty books in Russia, as well as a number of books in the United States, including The Magic of Merlin (Golden Books); Eek, Squeak, a Leak!; and The Elves and the Shoemaker.
