This book was inspired by the life of baseball pioneer Alta Weiss, born Feb. 9, 1890, in Ragersville, Ohio. In 1907, at age 17, she pitched for a semipro all-male team, the Vermilion Independents. The next season her father became a co-owner, & the team was renamed the Weiss All-Stars. Alta went on to become a doctor; she died in 1964. The book tells the story of her baseball days in the first person, accompanied by colorful & amusing illustrations.
