Based on true events, this is a dramatized historical account of the rebellion that was led by Pedro Prestán at a time when attention was focused on the building of the Panama Canal. Gunfights, pitched battles, true love, comradeship, cities under siege, a mud slide disaster, naval chases, a town burned to cinders, conscript armies, political intrigue, murder, ravages of disease, landings by the US Marines and a hanging -- all while Ferdinand de Lesseps is trying to build a canal to link the Atlantic and the Pacific. If it were a novel, it would be written off as an impossible plot -- but every major incident has been carefully researched and is presented in a roller coaster of suspense made more gripping by its authenticity. In one sense, it’s a shame this a novel, such is the incredible research that has gone into this little known incident in the history of Latin American imperialism and liberation struggles. As it is, much of the novel is lifted directly from telegrams, letters, poems, and eyewitness accounts from the various protagonists, woven together to present the only English history of the birth of a nation. Quite superb.Andrew Parkin is the author of 'Flames Of Panama: The True Story Of A Forgotten Hero, Pedro Prestan', published 2007 under ISBN 9781905237791 and ISBN 1905237790.
