Eutrophication in Europe¬s Coastal Waters

The major impacts of eutrophication due to overloading with nitrogen & phosphorus nutrients are changes in the structure & functioning of marine ecosystems, reduced biodiversity, & reduced income from fishery, mariculture & tourism. The main source of nitrogen is run-off from agricultural land brought to the sea via rivers. Most of the phosphorus comes from households & industry discharging treated or untreated wastewater to freshwater or directly to the sea, from soil erosion, & fish farming. This report evaluates the causes, state & development of eutrophication in European coastal waters, & identifies areas where more monitoring date are needed to improve assessment.
