SUMMARY

Drug abuse is a serious national health concern that costs American society billions of dollars and countless lives each year. Though it attracts the attention of politicians, mental health professionals, the media and members of the general public, little real progress has been made toward understanding the nature of the problem. Providing a perspective on alcohol and other drug abuse that should be of value to practitioners, course instructors, and students of psychology, counselling and sociology, this book should also be useful for anyone interested in developing a comprehensive understanding of substance abuse difficulties and their treatment. The organizing theme is that drug abuse can be conceptualized as a lifestyle, in which the individual demonstrates an increasing level of both commitment and preoccupation with drug-related activities, goals and relationships. The lifestyle model considers three primary categories of influence in offering a working model of drug-seeking behaviour. These three factors, commonly referred to as the "three C's", are conditions internal and external influences that increase or decrease a person's future risk of abusing drugs, choice decision-making processes of an individual, and cognition thinking patterns the individual uses to justify his or her decisions and subsequent drug use behaviour. The first section of this book probes biological, psychological, and sociological roots of drug abuse, and is followed by a discussion of developmental origins, features and progressions of drug lifestyle involvement. Finally, potential avenue of intervention and prevention are investigated in an effort to construct a comprehensive programme of lifestyle change. Applicable case studies are also examined in relation to these issues.Walters, Glenn D. is the author of 'Escaping the Journey to Nowhere The Psychology of Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse' with ISBN 9781560323181 and ISBN 1560323183.
