John Burnett is Emeritus Professor, Brunel University. His research interests are mainly in nineteenth- and twentieth-century social history, especially in the history of food and drink, housing, unemployment, the cost and standard of living and working class autobiographical history. He was Chairman of the Social History Society of the UK from 1985-1990. He is the author of nine books and co-editor of two, including Plenty and Want: A Social History of Food in England from 1815 to the Present Day (1st edition 1966) and Liquid Pleasures: A Social History of Drinks in Modern Britain (1999); Winner of the Andre Simon First Prize, 2000; shortlisted for the Guild of Food Writers Award.Burnett, John is the author of 'England Eats Out: A Social History of Eating Out in England from 1830 to the Present', published 2004 under ISBN 9780582472662 and ISBN 0582472660.
