Earthquake! : Beyond Duck, Cover, and Hold

The hands-on activities in this unit are designed to provide youth, ages 9-12, with experiences that will help them understand the science concepts related to earthquakes & the damage that earthquakes can cause. Youth will explore the different types of seismic waves, experience simulated levels of earthquake intensity, design & build towers that can withstand earthquake simulations, & discuss the application of this information. These activities will demonstrate that there is more to surviving an earthquake than simply ducking under a table, covering your head & face, & holding on. The unit poses questions & presents phenomena to be explored through hands-on activities. Community service is an integral part of the curriculum.
