Discovering Hypertext with Joyce, Faulkner and Borges

Few technological advances have impacted the way we live our lives as has the Internet. This breakthrough is considered to be a brainchild of a relatively small group of young, gifted electronics hobbyists in the mid- to late-70's. I argue, however, that this group was not constructing a new paradigm out of nothing; rather, they were expanding upon a way of thinking that leading writers of fiction in the first half of the 20th century had already articulated.
