SUMMARY

English for Academic purposes teachers and material developers around the world endeavour to prepare their learners for the academic events they will encounter in their years of study. If EAP teachers and materials developers are to help learners prepare for these events, they need descriptions of language use in them to inform lessons and materials development. It is the purpose of this book to offer such a description. The present work offers a description of language use and interaction in seminar discussions. The description is based on analysis of a set of authentic seminar class discussions. Three important aspects of seminar discussion are the main focus of the book: the interaction patterns involved in academic discussion, the questions and comments participants make and the conventualised uses of language participants use to lubricate the interaction. These conventualised uses are argued to play essential discourse signalling and interpersonal functions.Basturkmen, Helen is the author of 'Discourse in Academic Seminars H', published 2005 under ISBN 9780080443140 and ISBN 0080443141.
