On June 8, 1925 Tom O’Malley was the last of four children born to William and Marie O’Malley in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He attended Catholic schools in Pittsburgh and upon graduation from high school in June 1943 he enlisted in the U.S. Air Corps. Upon receiving a commission he served in the Fifth Air Force and flew thirty-four missions in the Western Pacific. He was involved in a crash landing. On another mission a five hundred pound bomb which had refused to release from the bomb bay fell to the runway when the plane’s wheels touched down. On August 8, 1945, while lead bombardier on a bombing mission over Nagasaki, he observed the mushroom cloud ascending over the atom bombing of Hiroshima. He received undergraduate and law degrees from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. In 1952 he was admitted to the Bar of the United States District Court for the District of Columbia, and entered into the private practice of law. He served as an assistant U.S. Attorney 1956-1962 in the United States District Court and otherwise was a private practitioner in the District of Columbia and its suburbs. His trial and appellate practice has been extensive. From 1972 to 1984 he taught a course on the Law at Immaculata High School in Washington, D.C.
