Seven in 10 were supervised in the community, through probation or parole. About 2.8% of all adult residents of the U.S. were under correctional supervision in 1997, up from 1.7% in 1985. About 9.0% of black adults, 2.0% of white adults, & 1.3% of adults of other races were under correctional supervision in 1997.
