SUMMARY

The conflicts within the women's suffrage movement eventually lead to the split between the suffragettes, who supported militancy, and those who opposed it. Not surprisingly, the historical record has been shaped by the political persuasions of a particular narrator. For example, the story of "Women's Social and Political Union" as told by Christabel Pankhurst differs from her sister Sylvia's "The Suffragette Movement" on the same topic: Christabel's militant stance clashed with Sylvia's belief that equality would come with social reform. More controversial still were those women in the Anti-Suffrage League, who were unconditionally opposed to women gaining the vote and whose writings also appear in these volumes, giving diverse perspective to the many controversies within British feminism.Roberts, Marie M. is the author of 'Controversies in the History of British Feminism', published 1995 under ISBN 9780415118736 and ISBN 0415118735.
