Mary Frances McKinney wrote for the Kansas Emporia Gazette newspaper from 1932 until 1962, as The Farm Woman. She was hired by William Allen White. She became well known, enjoyed and well read. She received $3.00 per newspaper column. It was not a lot of money, but back in the 19030's, it went much further. Mary wrote from her heart about family, farm life, politics and her readers were fond of her values and candor. She was a teacher, always willing to share better ideas for farm women, enlightening many of her readers about change on the farm. She was the warmth, and moral fiber of her community, stimulating the neighbors to action and always maintaining perfection. Ever proud to be known as a political person, she practiced the political art until her death. As a staunch Republican, she campaigned for Alf Landon, who ran for President against FDR in 1936. This is the story of her life, "the life' as she called it.Whitmer, Kathleen is the author of 'Chronicles of the Farm Woman : The Story of Mary Frances Mckinney', published 2007 under ISBN 9780979806810 and ISBN 097980681X.
