Fred Hirschmann, as part of his career, as a park ranger, spent several years at Petrified National Forest, one of the fascinating jewels of Arizona. But during that time, he also explored the rest of the state. As a result, a love of this area was born that will continue for a lifetime. Now a professional writer and photographer, Hirschmann has a number of books to his credit, including Yellowstone, Bush Pilots of Alaska, and Alaska's National Parks. More than one thousand of his images have appeared in magazines, calendars, books, and note cards by numerous publishers including Sierra Club, National Geographic Society, Eastman Kodak, and Audubon. To obtain the photographs for this book, Hirschmann drove the backroads of Arizona, rappeled into slot canyons, scaled mountains, attended Indian ceremonies, ran rivers, and traveled by foot and by horse into remote and rugged canyons. The images were taken with Mamiya 645s with 45mm, 80mm, 110mm, and 210mm Mamiya lenses and a Toyo 45A 4 X 5" field camera with Nikkor 90mm and 135mm and Fujinon 210mm lenses.
