As the founder of modern anthropology and ethnology Edward B. Tylor (1832-1917) made a significant contribution to our understanding of primitive peoples. He understood culture as a complex system which 'embraces knowledge, beliefs, customs, laws, manners and every kind of ability and lasting activity which man acquires as a member of society'. Tylor was a firm proponent of the view that different cultures develop through comparable stages into civilised societies. His animistic theories regarding the origin of belief in spirits independent of the body were influential. In Germany Tylor was well-known through the translation of his A History of Mankind. This book had a lasting influence on anthropology in its early development as an institutional discipline.Tylor, Edward B. is the author of 'Anfänge der Cultur : Untersuchungen über die Entwicklung der Mythologie, Philosophie, Religion, Junst und Sitte, Ubertragen von', published 2005 under ISBN 9783487120959 and ISBN 348712095X.
