Samuel Simon Schmucker (1799-1873) was a German-American Lutheran pastor and theologian. He was integral to the founding of the Lutheran church body known as the General Synod, as well as the oldest continously-operating Lutheran seminary and college in North America. Later in his career, Schmucker became a controversial figure because of his theological positions, in particular his approach to the Lutheran Confessions. Outside of the church, Schmucker was a noted abolitionist. In 1820 he helped to establish the General Synod of the Lutheran Church in America, one of the first organizations of the American Lutheran church. He was deeply loyal to his Reformation heritage, and sought to strengthen the Lutheran church in the United States by increasing its unity. He also worked to strengthen the ties of the American Lutheran church with its European roots.Schmucker, Samuel Simon is the author of 'American Lutheranism Vindicated: Or, Examination of the Lutheran Symbols', published 2007 under ISBN 9781406539127 and ISBN 1406539120.
